Thanks, Steve! I kind of liked it too until I saw this:

What devilry is that? :D Not only shorter but avoiding the mess of my last double-node. Very nice indeed!

That's an interesting variant. I guess you're never going to give up your unique way of using and not using '|', so I'm not wasting my breath on that any more (though it still hurts my eyes, not to mention feelings, every time) :D Anyway, here's two alternative ways to write that in one line:

(5)r9c3 = (5*)r1c3&(673)b7p985 - (3=1)r1c2 - (1|*5=9)r1c9 - (9=8)r8c9 - r8c1 = (8)r7c1 => -5 r7c1; stte

I like the first alternative, very good,it took me a lot of time as how to write it in one line,so I have to opt for two lines for clarity. However, the second term on your first alternative above (673)b7p985 is not clear to me as to what it means, I would have written it like this (673)r9c23,r8c2 which is more clear, it shows the cells involved. Can you explain it to me clearly? :D.

Hi Clement! Glad you liked it! Yes, you can write it that way too. These two are equivalent:

(673)b7p985 <=> (673)r9c32,r8c2

...because the individual cells are mapped like this:

b7p9 <-> r9c3
b7p8 <-> r9c2
b7p5 <-> r8c2

I agree that the second option (your way) is easier to read, but I personally prefer the first because it's shorter and shows more clearly that it's a single box-based cell group. Both expressions are correct and both have their own pros and cons. There's nothing wrong if you like the second form better and keep using it. You should probably learn to read the other format also because many of us use that as well. Here's how it's interpreted:

First, the boxes are mapped like this:

Code: Select all
     | c123 | c567 | c789 |
-----+------+------+------:
r123 |  b1  |  b2  |  b3  |
-----+------+------+------:
r456 |  b4  |  b5  |  b6  |
-----+------+------+------:
r789 |  b7  |  b8  |  b9  |
-----'------'------'------'

Second, the individual cells in the boxes are mapped similarly as positions:

Box 7 (for example):

Code: Select all
   | c1  c2  c3 |
---+------------+-
r7 | p1  p2  p3 |
r8 | p4  p5  p6 |
r9 | p7  p8  p9 |
---'------------'-

Now, let's look at our specific cell group:

Code: Select all
   | c1  c2  c3 |
---+------------+-
r7 |            |
r8 |      x     |
r9 |      x   x |
---'------------'-

It has three cells: {r8c2 r9c2 r9c3}. One way to express that as a group is with the comma, like you did: r8c2,r9c23. That way is actually the only option when the cell group is spread around in multiple boxes (like in the second term of my own solution), so it's more versatile. However, when the group is located in a single box, we have the option of avoiding the comma by using the box-position notation, which in this case is mapped like this:

Box 7: {p5 p8 p9} <-> {b7p5 b7p8 b7p9} <-> b7p589

I wrote it b7p985 because I wanted to put the linking positions first and last, but the ordering is just a matter of individual preference.

Note that any rNcN cell can be written using the box-position notation and vice versa. Some examples:

r1c1 <-> b1p1
r1c4 <-> b2p1
r2c1 <-> b1p4
r2c4 <-> b2p4
r6c8 <-> b6p8
r7c2 <-> b7p2
r8c5 <-> b8p5
r9c6 <-> b8p9
...etc.

Did that help?
