By suitably morphing the puzzle you can confine any 3 digits to 2 rows and 2 columns in separate tiers and stacks.

There is a curious "symmetry" about the solution. At the start, after a pointing pair, there are 5 consecutive locked quads, in Column 9 and Boxes 1, 3, 7 and 9 :? .

Code: Select all
 1       789    a678    | 5789   458    2      | 489   b4689   3
 6789    23      4      | 3789   138    1379   | 12     5     c689
 89      5       23     | 389    6      1349   | 7      12     489
------------------------+----------------------+---------------------
 457     1347    137    | 239    123    8      | 6      2349   57
 2       348     38-6   |f3569   7      3569   | 3489   3489   1
 5678    1378    9      | 4      123    136    | 238    238    57
------------------------+----------------------+---------------------
 48      12      5      |e2368   9      346    | 13     7     d468
 4789    6       12     | 2378   2348   347    | 5      13     489
 3       4789    78     | 1      458    4567   | 489    4689   2

(6)r1c3 = r1c8 - r2c9 = r7c9 - r7c4 = r5c4 => -6 r5c3; stte
interestingly also has a SK loop
