H3 Wing: (4=9) r6c6 - (9=8) r4c5 - r3c5 = (8) r3c6 => - 7 r3c6; stte

There is a typo in the grid for r3c6 that is carried down to your conclusion. Should be: r3c6<>4.

Marty, maybe you should consider an alternate notation for XY-Chains:

(9=9)r9c471,r3c15,r4c5 => r7c5<>9

Thanks for spotting that typo, my first dyslexic moment for a while.

BTW I've based my naming convention for H Wings on your post for the puzzle of 22nd March 2013, part of which reads:

Code: Select all
L3-Wing:  (X)a = (X   -  Y)b = (Y-Z)c = (Z)d     "a" and "d" in same unit; a<>Z, d<>X

H1-Wing:  same as L3-Wing
H2-Wing:  (X=Y)a - (Y)b = (Y-Z)c = (Z)d          "a" and "d" in same unit; a<>Z, d<>X
H3-Wing:  (X=Y)a - (Y=Z)b - (Z)c = (Z)d          "a" and "d" in same unit; a<>Z, d<>X

I've always been puzzled by the number following the H. To my mind it should correspond to the number of local Strong links in the chain, in which case the H1 and H3 names would be interchanged.

Perhaps I've missed something and you could explain what the number actually represents.

Some time back, there were discussions about naming chains of three strong links. The XY-Wing, W-Wing, and M-Wing were already named. IIRC, the S-Wing and L2-Wing followed. Then ronk slipped in the L3-Wing. Finally, StrmCkr (I believe?) reminded everyone of his earlier Hybrid posts -- where each pattern was simply numbered. I, and others, still use his original numbering.

I have a special version of my solver that identifies M/W/S/L-Wings with 3/4 strong links. In the 4-SL pattern, an additional strong link is allowed within the body of the chain. Otherwise, I just use my normal solver and make a mental note of any chains with three strong links.

OK thanks for the history lesson. I'll stick to the standard.

The Seeker may have standardized the h-wing, but I believe it was udosuk that got the ball rolling. See page two of this thread. (Interestingly enough, the memory topic is also broached in this thread.)
