I also found the Type 1 MUG(3478). It is only the second time I found one and I believe my first was also a simple Type 1 pattern. It seems anything more involved is beyond my ability............

So, I settled an alternate solution: 3r9c7=3r9c2-(3=56)r75c2-(6=572)r539c1 => r9c7<>2

I think you are expecting to see only bivalues in the pattern, but a MUG will always have at least one cell with 3 or more values (Multivalue Universal Grave.) The archetype for this particular MUG can be found here, among other places.

No matter which two digits you put in row 8 of the MUG in this puzzle you will force one of the two BUG-Lites above, or a (47)UR. Also, since row 8 in the pattern has 3 candidates in 2 cells, then obviously at least one must appear outside of those 2 cells. Check for yourself what happens to the pattern no matter which 2 you choose

Thanks Luke. This is getting into territory into which I ought not venture.. But I assume that the key is that 4 has only two possibilities in both the row and the box. Each cell has two possibilities and I think there might be 4 possible combinations of the two cells. I didn't test every one, but I assume you know from experience that the result is what it is. As far as MJ's treatise, let's say I might try that in my next life.

I am definitely not the MUG expert, but I looked at the pattern as an overlay of a BUG-Lite (378)r347c46 and an AUR(47)r28c46. As such, the MUG (3478)r2348c46 has only a single extra digit in those MUG cells, which is the 9 in r2c4. To me, this situation is identical to the classic Type 1 UR, thus the notation for this occurrence.
