Dan C - Help with a puzzle

Postby Dan C » Mon Apr 03, 2006 1:53 am

OK, so this is my first post and I'm something of a newbe, but have been pretty successful in solving puzzles so far if they can be solved using the more conventional methods. Here's a puzzle that's got me stumped. I'm probably just not seeing something obvious. The initial puzzle is as follows:

...|9..|..8
...|3..|2.6
7.8|6..|.5.
...|...|6.1
3.9|1.8|5.4
6.4|...|...
.8.|..3|4.2
9.7|..4|...
1..|..6|...

This is where I ended up:

2 6 135|9 57 157|37 4 8
4 59 15|3 8 157|2 79 6
7 39 8|6 4 2|1 5 39
8 257 25|4 237 79|6 2379 1
3 27 9|1 6 8|5 27 4
6 1 4|25 2357 579|3789 23789 379
5 8 6|7 9 3|4 1 2
9 23 7|258 1 4|38 6 35
1 4 23|258 25 6|378 3789 3579

Since this was in the newspaper, I'm assuming it can be solved without using advanced strategies.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

This is the same puzzle, stuck at the same location as the one I replied to here: http://forum.enjoysudoku.com/viewtopic.php?p=25041#p25041

You are right that it is the same puzzle, but it is not in the same state as Dan has already eliminated a 9 from r9c7. This makes a difference in that you only need to apply your finned x-wing, then another x-wing to eliminate the 3 from r6c9 and the puzzle will be solved.

Thanks for the quick replys! I checked my message over 2 or 3 times before I hit the submit button and still managed to make a typing error. So sorry!

r9c7 should read 3789. In fact, I wasn't able to eliminate the 9. I'll check Ruud's link for help.

Thanks to both of you, and sorry for the confusion I caused.
