This is the position after basics of the August1 posted puzzle. Cells r6c68 & r8c8 are all limited to candidates 1,8.
Does that not mean that r8c8 cannot be 1 or 8 as that would lead to multiple solutions through a Unique Rectangle?

No, unique rectangle cells must be in 2 boxes (and 2 rows and 2 columns).
If they are, in a solution you could exchange the 2 digits and would get a second solution.
If they are in 4 boxes, an exchange would give you 2 of the same digit in each of the boxes, i.e. no valid solution.
