59, 589 and 89, Do they cancel rest of row?

Postby RyanStorm » Sun Jun 07, 2015 5:18 am

I was doing a super sudoku, and I had this group in 3 boxes, and I wanted to double check to make sure they are exclusively in those 3 boxes.

In a 4x4 box, the bottom 4 boxes:

-----Box 1-|----Box 2 |---Box 3 |----Box 4
------59---|------0---|---589---|-----89

If those 3 were in those boxes like that, does that mean, that no matter what, Box 1, Box 3 and Box 4, will be some combo of "5 or 8 or 9", to the extent, that I can remove any 5's, 8's and 9's from the rest of the row, and the rest of the box??

Cause I tested,

If Box 1 is 5, then the other two are 8 and 9 or if Box 1 is 9, then Box 3 would be 5 and Box 4 would be 8

If Box 3 is 5, then Box 1 is 9 and Box 4 is 8 or if Box 3 is 8, then Box 4 is 9 and Box 1 is 5 or if Box 3 is 9, then Box 1 is 5, and Box 4 is 8

If Box 4 is 8, then Box 1 is 59 and Box 3 is 59 or if Box 4 is 9, then Box 1 is 5 and Box 3 is 8

In every scenario, 1 of each of the boxes was either 5, 8 and 9. But I just wanted to make sure this qualified to remove all other 5, 8 and 9's from the row and the 4x4 Box.

You are correct, three cells that share a house, which contain exactly three candidates, rule out any of those three candidates in any other cells of that house. This technique is called a Naked Triple.

Thanks for info. Weird I was looking through advanced tricks to freaking solve this lvl 4 of 5 Super Sudoku, and I saw that move but didn't realize it was this same thing. But it really opened it up, but I am stuck again.

Would the same thing work this way

-----Box 1-|----Box 2 |---Box 3 |----Box 4
------8D---|------6---|---28AD---|-----2A

The only other blank in that row is a 2 and 8...Would the above cancel out the 2 in 28?!?

I get this type of thing, where I test ever scenario:

-----Box 1-|----Box 2 |---Box 3 |----Box 4
------8D---|------28AD---|---2A---|-----28

Those are the 4 boxes left in a row...

If I played it out, to see which scenarios would lead to what,

So I did it based off Box 2, if it was 2, or 8, or A or D. Well 3 out of 4 times Box 1 is a D. The same thing goes for Box 3, 3 out of 4 times it is A. But in those scenarios 2 and 8 were swapped around between the other two. I can see my answer sheet that in those are the right answer, I just don't if I should consider them solid answers, or whether they would be lucky answers if I didn't look at answer sheet??

Sweet I found another:

-----Box 1-|----Box 2 |---Box 3 |----Box 4
------09---|------4---|---019---|-----19

This is like the 2nd one I have found since that 59, 589 and 89 one I posted first.

I finished it...it really takes harder sudoku's than you have done before to really learn new techniques.

I still haven't crossed a lot of those XY wings, but hidden pairs are something I have mastered. There is only 1 harder Super Sudoku that my paper releases and that is 5 of 5 difficulty. I think I might be ready for Samurai Sudoku, or Dragon Sudoku.
